Wing Chun Kung Fu is a Chinese martial art that focuses on practical efficient movements, emphasizing hand techniques and low kicks. Its three main empty hand forms are ingenious in their simplicity, teaching Wing Chun’s specialty of close range sticking and trapping.
While well known for its Chi Sau two-person drill and Wooden Dummy (Muk Yan Jong) training, other less common attributes of the system are the 6 ½ Point Pole (Luk Dim Boon Gwun) and Eight Slash knife form (Bat Jam Do).
Wing Chun’s origins are often told in the legend of Buddhist nun Ng Mui, one of the five elders to escape when the Shaolin temple was destroyed. She created the art from the movements of Snake and Crane then taught it to a young girl by the name of Yim Wing Chun. Whatever its origins, it was developed and used by revolutionary fighters and fugitives in the traveling opera companies during the Ching dynasty (1700’s). Wing Chun became popularly known only relatively recently through Bruce Lee and his instructor, Yip Man in the 1970’s.
